Food Poisoning in Thailand

Food Poisoning in Thailand

If you have been to Thailand you will know that food poisoning is possible and could happen at any time while you are on holiday. Unfortunately I am not able to tell you a fool-proof way to avoid getting sick but I will give you some handy tips I have learnt along the way. The last thing you want on a holiday is to be stuck to the bed resting your holiday away but it does happen.

I have been sick a few times in Thailand and I am careful and know what to eat and where etc. but I know it is not fun at all. In my experiences I have or people I know have only been sick in the bigger touristy areas, like Phuket, Bangkok etc. I have spent a lot of time in villages, off-route hidden attractions most tourist have not even heard of but I have never been sick in these remote locations. I was once hospitalised in Chiang Mai after eating in a well-known popular restaurant, I was also sick eating KFC in Pattaya. Serves me right for eating KFC in Thailand, right?

Hiring a Motorcycle/Scooter in Thailand

Honda Click Thailand

Hiring a Motorcycle/Scooter in Thailand

If you have ever been to Thailand you would have noticed that everyone rides a small Motorcycle/scooter. This is because it is much cheaper to purchase and much better on fuel then a larger vehicle. But like any other country riding a motorbike in Thailand is dangerous and being a tourist in that country can mean it’s more dangerous to you. But they are a fun and cheap alternative to Taxi’s and Tuk Tuk’s.

Traffic in Thailand is very different to the western world. There are road rules and laws but they are not followed or enforced as well as they would be in the western world. I like to call the traffic in Thailand, “Organised Chaos”. This is because if you see the traffic it will appear to be chaos, but as the locals do this every day, they have become accustom to the way and actually manage it very well. Now you throw a tourist with many years motorcycle riding experience and you are the one causing chaos to the traffic.

Thailand Trip Report – May 2016, Part 2

Pattaya Lookout Thailand trip

Thailand Trip Report – May 2016, Part 2

The rest of my time in Pattaya I went to the Sanctuary of Truth (look out for separate post soon), Big Buddha, a nice café on top of the Pattaya hills after Tambon at the Temple. All nights consisted of similar activities that would include, Walking Street, Soi Buakhao, Beach Rd, Many open air bars in various Soi’s and more Late Night Kebabs hahaha. I won’t go into the nightlife too much now (but will do a separate post soon), but will say great times were had, people were met, and “Bin’s” were paid. If you like to Party, Pattaya is the place for you.

Thailand Trip Report – May 2016, Part 1

Sabai Sabai Bar

Thailand Trip Report – May 2016 (Part 1)

So during May 2016, I went to Thailand for another holiday. This time I was visiting Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Instantly as you get off the plane you can feel that the heat is intense and I was wearing pants and a jacket at this stage. So first thing was to change into something cooler and then head off to the Hotel in Bangkok. Landing at Don Mueang there was no Sky Train available so off to the Taximeter rank, I find this the cheapest and easiest option, rather than a private transfer.

During the Taxi ride it was visible that there has been a lot of works going on to improve the Transport throughout Bangkok. The new rail line from Don Mueang has come a long way since September and looks like it may actually get completed. This Skyrail will join Don Mueang to the existing Skyrail BTS. There are also long term plans to create a Skyrail from Survarnabhumi to Utapao Airport (Pattaya/Rayong). Travelling along the Expressway you could also see works occurring to the areas around the Bangkok Train Station where more upgrades to the Thailand rail network are being completed.

The Phuket Ride

Phromthep Cape

The Phuket Ride

Every time I go to Phuket I make sure I hire scooter so that I can get around easily and quickly. For a Honda Click (125cc) you will pay 200 – 300B per day and they do not use much fuel. The larger the motorcycle the more your daily rate will be. You will also be provided with a helmet, which should be worn at all time when on the Motorcycle. How to hire a Motorcycle in Thailand

Riding a Motorcycle in Thailand is very different to western countries in many ways. No matter how good you are at riding you may not be prepared for the riding in Thailand. The rules do not get followed, lanes and lines mean nothing and the Westerner is always at fault. In saying that if you feel safe enough to ride a Scooter, then go for it as it is great fun and a cheap form of transport

Thailand Low Cost Airlines

Nok Air Thailand

Thailand Low Cost Airlines

Well on my recent trip to Thailand I flew to a few different destinations with a few different low-cost airlines, so I thought I would do a write up on what I found from each of them.

So in Thailand you have the option of the “premium airlines” like Thai Airways and Bangkok Air that fly out of Survarnamhumi Airport in Bangkok. You also have the bigger low-cost airline options of Air Asia, Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, Thai Smiles and Orient Thai which fly out of Don Mueang airport in Bangkok. These airlines will get you anywhere where you need to go domestically within Thailand. I am a larger guy at 194cm tall so airplanes and I are not normally friends but I love Thailand so put up with it.

So you have met a girl… Part 2

Freelance Girls

So you have met a girl… Part 2

If you have ever been to Thailand you would know that you will often see older males with a young and very beautiful Thai woman.  The first thing that comes to mind is that she is in it for the money. On some occasions that is that case but not all. The Thai people are very open with love. 9 times out of 10 you will find that a Thai woman will pay more attention to the person himself than the superficial factors like looks, age, weight etc. They are genuine loves and strong believers in staying true to their Partner. “But what about all the stories of Thai woman with many sponsors?”. Well to answer that you will have to know that in Traditional Thai Culture, Family will always come first. So if it means being “un-true” to their partner then so be it. Even to the point if the family do not like the partner the family could end the relationship.. From my experience I found out so much about my family that I did not know about beforehand. So my wife kept things about her family away from me. After our Thai wedding ceremony I was officially family and I learn a lot over the coming few days.

Is it Still Safe to Travel to Thailand? – Martial Law

Is it Still Safe to Travel to Thailand? – Martial Law

Is it still safe to travel to Thailand? In short, Yes!!  Quoted by many tourists – “It is not noticeable, even in Bangkok”

As many may know from recent news Thailand is currently in a state of Martial Law due the previous government being stood down and possible civil unrest in Bangkok. On May 22 2014, The military announced that they were taking over administration of the country. Since the military coup there have been a number of anti-coup demonstrations in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand, including in areas frequented by tourists. The military has arrested some participants for failing to comply with orders to cease protest activity. These confrontations are potentially volatile. Tourists should stay well clear of all demonstrations, political events, rallies and processions and large-scale public gatherings as they may turn violent.

Why are there so many Sex workers in Thailand?

Heaven Above girls

Why are there so many Sex workers in Thailand?

One question I am asked frequently is “why are there so many Sex workers in Thailand?” I will give my opinion using information gathered from the Thai sex workers themselves to explain this question. But to answer this question I have to start by giving a quick background of Thai culture and Thai families.

As Thailand is a 3rd world country the Thai people are not very well off financially so a lot of Thai parents cannot afford to put their children through good schooling or University. Unless you have these qualifications it is very hard to find a job that earns well. As well in Thailand there is no welfare, no pension and no employer paid superannuation. You will also find as a lot of the Thai people are not well educated a larger percentage of Thai nationals cannot read or write.
