Pattaya

Pattaya

Pattaya is located in the Chon Buri district of Central Thailand, south of Bangkok on the Coast. Pattaya has inherited the title of “The Sin City of Asia” due to its large presence of the Thailand Sex Scene. Pattaya has quickly become a favourite location for many tourists with many of them deciding to relocate to the area. In Pattaya an expat can hold titles to a Condo but like the rest of Thailand a foreigner is unable to own land in Thailand.

Pattaya was initially a fishing town that started to boom during the Vietnam War when it become inhabited by the military and was transformed into a family-orientated seaside destination.  Other than getting involved in the sex trade Pattaya has a variety of different activities to experience. A big caller for tourists is that there are 21 golf courses within an hour of Pattaya, theme parks, zoos, Gardens, Go-Karting and many beautiful attractions including The Sanctuary of Truth.

As Pattaya has a large Chinese-Thai population so Chinese New year is celebrated largely in the area within January and February. Also celebrated in Pattaya is Song Kran, Loi Krathong, The Pattaya international Music festival, Miss Tiffany Ladyboy beauty pageant, Burapa Pattaya Bike Week and many other events.

Walking Street is one of the most famous Streets in Asia. Located on Beach Rd in Pattaya City, it attracts tourists and Locals primarily because of it being a Re-Light District. The Red Light district runs from the south side of beach rod to Bali Hai Pier and has a large Video wall entrance off Beach rd. Built up of many Soi’s(small streets) lined with adult entertainment in the forms of Massage Parlours, Go-Go Bars, Beer Bars, Saunas, Nightclubs and Brothels and well lit by many neon lights.  Pattaya’s Red Light District also has the largest Gay scene in all of Asia with Boyztown and Sunee Plaza and a large Ladyboy presence.

While in Pattaya the best way to get around is on the Songthaew, also known as a “Baht Bus”, which is a shared Taxi taking you to locations around Pattaya at a small charge. The Baht Buses will run many routes including regular travel around Beach Rd and Pattaya 2nd Rd, travelling to and from Jomtien Beach rd. There are also routes which travel between Pattaya 2nd Rd and Sukhumvit rd for those not staying close to the action of Walking St.  To catch a Baht Bus, waive down the required Baht Bus with your palm down, don’t talk to the drive, just get in the back. Ring the buzzer when you want to get out and hand the driver 10 Baht per person. A couple tips are to not get into a waiting Baht Bus and do not ask the driver where he is going as he will think you are after a Private trip.  If you are after private trips negotiate a price with the driver like you would any Tuk Tuk driver.

Jomtien Beach

Jomtien Beach is south of Pattaya City and is a good place to get away from the Hustle and  Bustle of the Red-Light District in Pattaya City. Jomtien beach is just over the Phra Tamnak hill (also known as Big Buddha Hill) from Pattaya City and is home to many high-rise condominiums, beachfront homes, hotels, resorts and the choosen location for many retired Expats. The Main attractions of the area are watersports including Scuba Diving, Wind surfing, kiteboarding and the usual Jet Skis and Parasailing (check Scams before hiring a Jet Ski). The Jomtien Beach is a much better beach for swimming, relaxing on the sand and in general in comparison to Pattaya City’s beach, and with a 265-meter section of Jomtien Beach (also known as Dongtan Beach) it is home to Pattaya’s only gay beach.
