Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are in the Northern Region of Thailand. The native language in this area is called Lanna, but the Thai language is also spoken here. The Northern region of Thailand is a very beautiful area surrounded by mountainous terrain bordering Myanmar and Laos. With many Hill Tribes, Temples and great Motorcycle routes Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai could be the location for you. I also highly recommend Northern Thailand for a great Massage. I have had many massages in Thailand but my top 3 Massages were in Chiang Mai.

In 1296 Chiang Mai became the capital of the Kingdom of Lanna (1296 – 1768) and was Named Chiang Mai as it means “New City”. It is the largest most culturally significant city of northern Thailand and has become popular to Tourists with a good mix of attractions, shopping and some nightlife. The Nightlife scene here is not as full on as Phuket, Bangkok or Pattaya making this a great family location, a lot of Thai nationals will visit Chiang Mai as a holiday destination.  The only thing that Northern Thailand doesn’t supply is a beach, which is why it is not as popular as Phuket or Koh Samui. Even without a beach Chiang Mai made it into TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Best Destinations in the World along with only one other Thailand destination.

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai Attractions

Chiang Rai is about 2 hours drive from Chiang Mai and a smaller and quieter city to Chiang Mai and Thailand’s Northern-most city. Both are very similar places but Chiang Rai doesn’t attract as much attention from tourists. Chiang Rai can be visited on Tours from Chiang Mai but I liked the peaceful location for a few nights to sit back and relax.  In 1432 the Phra Kaeo, (Emerald Buddha), the most revered Buddha statue, was discovered in Chiang Rai when an earthquake split the Chedi(a mound or monument where a Buddha’s remains have been laid to rest) at the original Wat Phra Kaeo of Chiang Rai City. This is now located in Bangkok at the new Wat Phra Kaeo on the same site of the Grand Palace.

Motorcycle Tours

Other areas of Northern Thailand that tourist’s tend to visit are Mae Hong Son, Nan, Sukhothai, Mai Sai (Border crossing to Myanmar/Burma), Phitsanulok and Pai. Most of these places do not get the numbers of tourists as Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai but are good places for a day trip or an overnight stay. These places are often travelled to on Motorcycle tours or rides.
